Langrisser II is a turn-based strategy game originally released in 1994 for the Sega Mega Drive in Japan. In 1995, a new version was released for the Super Famicom under the title Der Langrisser, which introduced additional story paths and more refined mechanics. This version is often considered the definitive version of the game due to its expanded branching storyline.
Plot[]
The story begins with Elwin and his friend Hein traveling through the countryside when they rescue Liana, a priestess chosen by the Goddess Lushiris. Liana is being pursued by the forces of the Rayguard Empire, led by the ambitious Emperor Bernhardt, who seeks to use the power of both Langrisser and Alhazard to conquer the world. Bernhardt believes that only by ruling with absolute power can peace be achieved, but his ambitions attract the attention of darker forces. Elwin’s quest to protect Liana and stop Bernhardt takes him on a journey across the continent of El Sallia, where he faces various factions, including the Descendants of Light - a group dedicated to protecting the ancient powers of Lushiris - and the Dark Apostles, who serve Chaos, the embodiment of destruction.

While the original Langrisser II only allows Elwin to follow the path of Light, all subsequent versions of the game feature a branching storyline in which Elwin must make key decisions that shape the course of the story and determine his ultimate allegiance. In these versions, players can choose to side with the forces of light and restore balance to the world, join Bernhardt’s imperial ambitions, align with the dark forces of Chaos, or even forge a path of neutrality. Each decision has far-reaching consequences, affecting the fate of Elwin, his companions, and the world of El Sallia.
The game's narrative is known for its complexity, as no side is purely good or evil. Characters are morally nuanced, and the choices players make lead to different perspectives on the ongoing conflict. Langrisser II challenges players to question their allegiances and face the consequences of their actions.
